le problème du titre réside si on désire un contraste ou pas. Des lettres ‘fortes’ apparaissent mieux en négatif .  A moins d’écrire en postif mais en remplissant de titre une meme page, comme pour un exercice d’écriture comme a l’école…

As a foreigner I > Chinese calligraphy ancient form

my baby steps on learning writing ancient characters

rvccallinyc15nycosi-46 rvccallinyc15nycosi-741 rvccallinyc15nycosi-749

When you have not been able to find anything else more complex in writing to satisfy yourself.

It is said ” write” calligraphy, when in my opinion it is truly  “draw ” it, or at the very least ” design “it.

Similarly ‘we’ had getting use labeling ourselves as ‘Westerners’ – and not only versa ‘Asians’ – while more accurately, they have been calling us for 1000 of years ‘foreigners’. Which it exactly what we are, even so we never wanted to accept this fact. As it is pretty obvious for me, as soon as I try to draw the very first Chinese character – it does become all ‘foreign’ to me… And I can sense it is going to take a very long time of serious concentration before it will feel less puzzled by it… and than again it would be only a start…

Being ‘foreign[er]’, should began by being aware of our own lack of knowleadge [regarding other cultures], it is very humbling, it’s a step …  from finally getting a chance of dropping ‘privileged ‘ given to us from where we come from and consequently accepting to learn from scratch, tackling like a child unfamiliar grounds de be ‘discover’…. definitlly not with a Colombus agenda!

Some people remain reluctant embracing other peoples cultures because it is way easier to ‘colonize’ them.

Getting into the game of ‘narrowing’ someone else culture isn’t it by defacto shrinking and suffocating ours?

My face in not book > Bushwick > New York

drawing faces in a [sketch] book

rvinknyc15-bwisknu09rvinknyc15-bwisknu11rvinknyc15-bwisknu08

No bigger challenge in my mind than drawing live someone else face. Rememberance of my early years, such an intimidating and facinating moment, . while you are obviously panicking laying it down just with lines in a frensy hand motion. It’s about what you eye is trying to figure out while your hand is endless betraya you. Unless it is your eye that is being simply too lazy or your guts too shallow to perceive what an human is expressing to you. In any event, you will end with the frustration of having miss the boat, when others are mainly concern if yes or not “it looks like…”

While the real goal should be reaching for the “mood “, the immense trap to avoid turning your drawing into a ‘caricature’. As it is very tempting not falling into over reacting on what ‘irriates’ you, versa reaching to the person, concentrating fully on the human being aspect. Who is after all, nothing but, a mirror of your own living time on this earth , it is a portrait of your ownself that you display by drawing someone elses – while foolling yourself  you are in charge and managing the ‘vision’ of person you are happening to try sketching …

Are women feeling safe ? > New York Times

Commissioned sketches for story on the ‘ Travel ‘ Section of the newspaper
rvinknyc14nyt-viol11 For an investigation of women risks while traveling abroad, by Lauren Wolfe

“For us, for women, there is a different tourist map of the globe — one in which we are told to consider the length of our skirts and the cuts of our shirts, the time of day in which we choose to move around, and the places we deem “safe” overall. For us, sexualized violence is always a possibility. “rvinknyc14nyt-viol10
